Crab Island is not an island. It is a shallow sandbar in Destin Harbor / Santa Rosa Sound that appears when the tide is low enough to stand on. On a fair October Saturday the harbor fills with pontoons, speakers, and people in water shoes. On a windy one it is a washing machine. We treat the water as the boss: the host will confirm the boat plan two days out. If the harbor is ugly, we pivot to Henderson Beach and call it a gulf day anyway. October water here is still swimmable. Bring a float and a sense of humor.
How the days go
Friday night (optional)
If you’re already in town: HarborWalk walk, early night. The sandbar likes people who slept.
Saturday morning
Meet at Destin Harbor / HarborWalk marina area. Boat or pontoon for the group — booked that week, not a named partner. Life jackets on. Water shoes on.
Midday
Raft up on the bar if the tide allows. Stand in the harbor. Eat whatever traveled well. No glass in the water.
Afternoon
Back through the harbor before the light gets long. Rinse. A slow walk on the boardwalk. If we pivoted to Henderson, we stay until the park says go.
Who it’s for
Easygoing people who can hold a plan that follows the water. Fine with a last-minute pivot. Not the day for white linen or a tight schedule.
What to bring
- Water shoes — shells, and the occasional stingray shuffle
- A float if you have one
- Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard
- A dry bag and cash for a boat drink
- No glass. The harbor remembers.

A note
Crab Island is weather- and tide-dependent. Check Destin tide charts; lower tide means more bar. A hard south wind usually means we cancel the boat, not the gathering.
